Systems biology requires the integration of biology, technology, computation and medicine and, accordingly, a strong cross-disciplinary team of researchers. The ISB includes scientists trained in such diverse fields as biology, physics, chemistry, engineering, computing, mathematics, medicine, immunology, biochemistry, and genetics. All speak the language of biology, all are acquiring a deep understanding of biology, and all have assembled into a multiplicity of teams that are attacking focused and important problems of systems biology.

Many ISB faculty members maintain affiliate appointments with academic institutions such as the University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Caltech University.

As one can see below, the strikingly cross-disciplinary faculty embodies the spirit of systems biology.

 Team Members:  Area of Expertise:
John Aitchison  Complex molecular machines, cell biology,
 influenza
Nitin Baliga  Microbial genetics, extremophile biology and
 gene regulatory networks
Aimée Dudley  Genetics, gene regulatory networks,
 technology development
David Galas  Genetics, technology for biology applications,
 complex network analysis and function
Lee Hood  Adaptive immunity, genomics and biotechnology
Sui Haung  Molecular and cell biology, cancer biology,
gene regulatory networks and theory of complex
 systems
Robert Moritz  Proteomics, protein chemistry, technology
 development
Joseph Nadeau  Genetics, genomics, bioinformatics and mouse models of human disease
Adrian Ozinsky  Immunology, cell biology and biotechnology
Nathan Price  Computational biology, biochemical reaction networks, genome-scale models, translational bioinformatics
Jeff Ranish  Proteomics, macromolecular complexes and
 transcriptional regulation
Ilya Shmulevich  Computational biology, signal and
 image processing

Scientists from around the world who specialize in systems biology also have the opportunity to access Institute resources such as the facilities and technology to generate data to use in their own laboratories.
