‘1 in 1,000:’ Dr. Sean Gibbons Named Highly Cited Researcher for 2023

ISB Associate Professor Dr. Sean Gibbons was named a Highly Cited Researcher for 2023. It is the second consecutive year Gibbons has earned the distinction. The Highly Cited Research list is generated annually by Clarivate, which says: “Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers are 1 in 1,000.”

ISB Honors Researchers Who Give Back to STEM Education

This year, two deserving scientists were bestowed recognition for giving back to STEM education. Dr. Serdar Turkarslan is the recipient of the JoAnn Chrisman Award for Distinguished Service to STEM Education, and Dr. Christian Diener was awarded the Dr. Christine Schaeffer Award for Exemplary Service to STEM Education.

Six Years In, ISB’s Innovator Award Program an ‘Unqualified Success’ 

The fifth cycle of ISB’s Innovator Award Program officially wrapped up this week with the principal investigators of the 2021-22 projects delivering their final presentations. In April, three 2022-23 Innovator Award collaborative projects were announced. The Innovator Award Program was launched in 2017, and has been tremendously successful.

Washington Research Foundation once again generously pledged $100,000 to fund the awards.

Dr. Jim Heath Named Fellow of AACR Academy Class of 2022

Dr. Jim Heath was announced as a newly elected Fellow of the American Academy for Cancer Research (AACR) Academy Class of 2022. “I am honored and humbled to be recognized as part of this renowned group of researchers who have done so much to move our understanding of cancer forward,” Heath said.

Three Collaborative Projects Announced for ISB’s 2021 Innovator Award Program

ISB has kicked off the fifth year of its Innovator Award Program by announcing three collaborative and cross-disciplinary projects. The program was created in 2017 to support early-career scientists working on high-risk, high-reward innovations, and champions interdisciplinary collaboration for non-faculty ISB researchers.

Andy Hill CARE Fund Awards $100,000 to ISB's Dr. Wei Wei

To advance research at the intersection of COVID-19 and cancer, The Andy Hill CARE Fund has awarded ISB Assistant Professor Dr. Wei Wei a $100,000 grant to study chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), one of the most commonly diagnosed leukemias in the Western world that mainly affects older individuals.

Daniel Chen, an undergraduate researcher in ISB’s Heath Lab and junior at the University of Washington, has been awarded a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. Chen has been a key member of ISB’s COVID-19 Immune Response Study.

ISB Researchers Among Recipients of AACR Team Science Award

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) has recognized The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project with the 2020 AACR Team Science Awards. Award recipients include Dr. Ilya Shmulevich, ISB professor and head of the Shmulevich Lab; ISB senior research scientist Dr. Vésteinn Þórsson; and former Shmulevich Lab members Drs. Brady Bernard and Theo Knijnenburg.

ISB’s Dr. Nathan Price Inducted into AIMBE’s College of Fellows 

Dr. Nathan Price has been inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering’s (AIMBE) College of Fellows. Price was nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for his contributions deriving medical and biological insights from large-scale data analysis and network modeling, and translating those insights to society.

Dr. Nathan Price Named NAM Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine Scholar

The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) announced ISB’s Dr. Nathan Price as a 2019 Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine Scholar. NAM’s Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine Program provides a platform for a new generation of leaders to collaborate with the NAM and its members across generations and fields of expertise.

The Andy Hill Cancer Research Endowment (CARE) is a public-private partnership that supports cancer research in Washington state. CARE announced ISB Assistant Professor Dr. Wei Wei as a CARE Fund Distinguished Researcher and awarded him $500,000.

ISB President Dr. Jim Heath Awarded $750,000 from Andy Hill Cancer Research Endowment

The Andy Hill Cancer Research Endowment (CARE) announced $750,000 in grant funding for Dr. Jim Heath’s work on proactive cancer immunotherapies for initial and recurrent disease. This is the first stage of a planned longer program led by Jim and ISB, and involving Swedish Cancer Institute, Earl A. Chiles Research Institute in Portland, and UW Medicine.

The seventh annual Valerie Logan Luncheon was held November 8, 2018, and celebrated the mission of the ISB Education team to engage entire school systems — from principals and administrators to teachers and students — to ensure all students are STEM literate. The theme of the event was “Elevating K-12 STEM Education.”
