| TOP 15 PLACES TO WORK IN ACADEMIA The Institute for Systems Biology has been named one of the Top 15 Places to Work in Academia by The Scientist magazine! The Scientist cited the Institute's strengths in research resources and management. ISB is the only ranked institution in the Pacific Northwest and one of only four along the entire West Coast. In addition, ISB placed first among the top 15 places to work in the number of times other researchers cited its research papers in their work. To arrive at these findings, The Scientist surveyed researchers from around the country, asking about job satisfaction, infrastructure and environment, teaching and mentoring, support and encouragement of research activities, and much more. |

ALAN ADEREM NAMED TO GLOBAL HIV VACCINE COMMITTEE ISB Co-founder and Director Alan Aderem, PhD, is one of 18 renowned scientists named to the inaugural Science Committee of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise. The Enterprise is an alliance of independent organizations working around the world to accelerate development of a preventive HIV vaccine. According to Dr. Alan Bernstein, executive director of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise, the Science Committee will help the Enterprise set its scientific agenda and will contribute to its scientific strategic plan. "This appointment acknowledges that systems biology is likely to provide the requisite scientific insights to facilitate rational vaccine design," Aderem said. "This is in large measure due to recent contributions of ISB scientists to vaccinology, both at the basic science and translational level." "Since the Enterprise will advise all of the major funding bodies for the HIV vaccine initiative, ISB will play a fundamental role in building an effective vaccine against one of the greatest health challenges of our time," added Aderem. The original Enterprise stakeholders and funding bodies include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), French National Agency for Research on AIDS and Viral Hepatitis (ANRS), Wellcome |
