By virtue of our independence, ISB has created a truly cross-disciplinary environment with renowned/talented scientists from multiple fields, plus supporting laboratory and computational infrastructure. This unique environment enables ISB scientists to "invent the future"—pioneering systems biology and its applications in an expeditious manner.
Research into systems biology is an expensive undertaking. However, the Institute does not have the security and financial resources that come with being part of a large state-funded university. To date, ISB's primary source of funding has been federal grants and research contracts. These are generally—programmatic—in nature, tied to specific research projects, and thus not intended to fund ground-breaking research.
In order to fund truly innovative research, develop new technologies, and sustain the infrastructure necessary for such leading edge work, ISB is seeking to raise a $100 million. This will provide the Institute with resources which are essential to pioneering new approaches in biology and medicine for the 21st century. We ask you to join us in supporting this exciting endeavor.
